Wendy Allen, Artist
Wendy Allen is perhaps the world’s only known artist who devotes herself passionately to one subject. And Lincoln Into Art is certainly one of the world’s most unique art galleries.
Allen is continuously asked why she paints Abraham Lincoln. “It is never easy to explain a passion”, says Allen. “For me, his face, is familiar and comforting. It symbolizes humanity, wisdom, and moral courage. And he is one of the few historical figures we can all admire–self-taught, self-made.”
“My hope is that by transforming the black-and-white and sepia tones from the past, I can keep Lincoln within our grasp. I want people to see him as a modern figure, still powerful and relevant, and with much to teach us. He never ceases to inspire me.”
Allen has been painting Lincoln for about 30 years. In that time, she has completed nearly 200 images of him. No two have ever been alike.
Allen grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and studied political science at the University of Bridgeport, in Connecticut. She had a professional career in educational publishing for more than 20 years, lastly as Creative Director of Interactive Media for a major New York publisher. She left publishing in 2008 to paint full-time.
